Comments from Students and Community In the early months of 1999, Dr. Carl V. Patton, president of Georgia State University, made presentations of the Main Street Master Plan to several hundred students, faculty and staff and to approximately 50 downtown leaders and residents. Here are some of their comments... |

leaders and residents: Brilliant! Thoughtful and progressive . . . perhaps even vital for long-term survival! I like lowering plazas and wide streets. I don't like demolition of historic buildings — should at least preserve facades. Consider using Kell Hall for married and graduate student housing. Turn it into a loft type development. Build a new classroom building on vacant land. Are you keeping any of the historic bldgs. in GSU? Consider reusing these!! How are you going to ensure the graduate/married housing is affordable in the downtown area? Where are the kids going to play? Is there a plan for a playground? Daycare? Schools? What is the financial impact on students for this plan? Keep on! Downtown needs you — looks like a good start. I think it's a terrific plan that will enhance our downtown environment! Good luck! The plan itself is ambitious; the intent: good! However, more input is needed to ensure that the integration into Atlanta's ever changing urban fabric is feasible. Superb plan — added green space and street level orientation will make a real difference. GSU will definitely be the university of the new millenium. Students: I'm happy to see Kell and Sparks go. I think this Master Plan is beautiful, and I will be even prouder to graduate from Ga. State now. I think it's an excellent plan as long as it will not cause a huge increase in student fees. Finally, GSU will look and feel like a real university. I love it! I'm all for it. Can't wait to see it!!! Great ideas. I think that the new Main Street Master Plan is great. I am a sophomore here at GSU and the only concern that I have about this university is that you don't get the real college experience. Excellent- speed it up. It will make GSU more campus-like in comparison to other universities and hopefully will invite students to become more involved and put more care into their school. The plans appear to give the campus a much needed identity of its own. The unique design sets it apart from any site nearby. The idea of making Georgia State University feel like more like a traditional university is great. The Main Street Plan would make for a lot more campus vibrant lifestyle. I wish I would be here. Diverting traffic around campus would be good as well so we don't have to dodge traffic on the way to class. |
The
idea for graduate and married student housing closer than undergraduate
housing should be reversed. Undergraduate should be closer to campus. It's
safer and more convenient, most don't own cars. Graduate and married students
are more stable, they have automobiles and usually want more independence.
Hurry up and start building so I can experience the new sites. The buildings seem as if they are going to be more university oriented. It looks more comfortable to a college student. I would love to send my children here. Georgia State — as hard as we try, it still eludes the typical college campus atmosphere. We have a unique opportunity to bridge two gaps with our current vocation. With this Master Plan, we can have a "true" college campus within a working atmosphere. Truly the best of two worlds. I love the great idea!!! It makes the campus feel more like a campus and less like a job. New is better!!! I plan to graduate in the year 2001, but I will come back to see this great project finished. I just would not want our student fees to be increased, and we will not be able to take advantage of this project. Most impressive! Just a possible suggestion: "The 10 minute walk" promotion of blending with the city is great, but if more concrete practical benefits for students are played up, even more student support should arise. Overall, I'm excited. Graphics of presentation was very inspiring. Concerns: Disruption of student activities during construction of Collins St. plaza still do not agree with site of new classroom. Preservation is an important part of any "Main Street" program and by borrowing this name it gives the impression that there is some connection. I especially like the family housing, and think it should have happened long ago. Don't tear down any more historic buildings. Utilize them as part of the planning process. The Main Street Master Plan is very well thought out. A "campus " is needed to give students, faculty, and staff a sense of cohesiveness and belonging. Well done! The idea of making the campus larger and more accessible is great, but in doing all this you will create more traffic, confusion from students getting around from place to place. If I drive, this plan limits my parking. Georgia State's Master Plan will definitely place GSU on the map. The classroom facility is needed. Excited to hear Kell and Sparks will be torn down. Quite appealing as a final step in the completion of transforming GSU into an urban campus. |
