Mission Statement

The Georgia State University Office of New Student Programs and Parent Relations is committed to recruiting, retaining and developing students. We will do so by: introducing new students to Georgia State University, offering orientation programs that facilitate their integration into curricular and co-curricular life, providing programs that enhance student development through involvement and leadership opportunities, and offering programs that integrate parents and families into University life.

Services Provided

  • Incept: New Student Orientation - Georgia State University's orientation program for new freshmen and transfer students, and their parents. The program consists of 19 summer sessions (for fall), two spring term session and one summer school session.
  • Panther Welcome- a collaborative program provided for new and current students during the first two weeks of classes to assist in their campus transition as well as create a welcoming environment for all students.
  • Freshmen Convocation - a freshmen class induction ceremony, during which the Georgia State University President formally welcomes and inducts the new freshman class.
  • Parents Association - an organization for parents of new students. A Lifetime membership is $50. Programs and services include family night at Panther Prowl, Family Game Night at the Sports Arena, list-serve communication with the Office of New Student Programs, and discounts at various university venues.
  • T.O.A.S.T . - the Targeting Outstanding Achievements of Student Transfers program honors transfer students with certificates of appreciation for their campus involvement and participation in student activities and campus life.
  • Family Weekend- a fun filled weekend planned to celebrate students and their families on September 27th and 28th, 2008. Planned activities include an ice cream social and various day trips.

Student Involvement Opportunities

  • Incept Team (Inceptors) - a group of 25 paraprofessionals who participate in an extensive 100 hour training program and are selected each fall semester. Inceptors are committed to assisting incoming freshmen and transfer students with their transition to Georgia State University and introducing them to the university's faculty, staff, students and resources. New Student Programs and Parent Relations seeks under graduate students to serve on the Incept team.
  • Alpha Lambda Delta - a national honor society for freshmen who earned a 3.5 GPA or higher. Honor society activities include community service projects and campus tutoring for other freshmen.
  • Tau Sigma - a newly chartered transfer honor society in which inducted transfer students have earned a 3.5 GPA or higher.
  • Freshmen Connections - is an organization with a focus on the freshmen of Georgia State University.
