Atlanta Metropolitan Growth Project

Project Overview:

The Atlanta Metropolitan Growth Project is producing digital recordings of interviews with civic and political leaders who have shaped the growth of the counties of the Atlanta metropolitan region in the past half century. Together, these interviews will help to tell the story of Atlanta’s growth from a city of 500,000 to a metropolis of over 4 million in the second half of the 20th century.

Project Demonstration:

Project Director Tim Crimmins participated in interviews of Atlanta civic and political leaders in the early 1990s that were used in the WPBA 8-part television series, “The Making of Modern Atlanta.” Excerpts from these interviews tell the story of how metropolitan services were first introduced in DeKalb county in the 1950s, how Dan Sweat initiated the work of the Atlanta Regional Commission, how civic leaders like Manual Maloof, Doroth Felton, Harry West, Wayne Shakleford, Andrew Young and Harry West work through the Atlanta Regional Commission to address regional problems, and how Dan Sweat navigated from his planning work with the Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC) to Central Atlanta Progress (CAP).
