Academic Advisement

   Academic Advisement and Placement Exams:

Advisement

All students attending Incept are required to receive academic advisement from representatives of the Student Advisement Center or their college or school. Academic Advisement will give you a chance to learn about the curriculum for your degree program and how to plan your first semester's schedule.

Incept New Student Orientation is mandatory for all new entering freshmen. Incept New Student Orientation is mandatory for all new entering freshmen. If you do not have the opportunity to attend an Incept conference and you are a Freshman or Transfer student with less than 42 credit hours, you must contact the Department of Undergraduate Studies and either register for GSU 1010 if you are planning to begin in the summer semester, or register for an FLC if you are planning to begin in the fall semester. Students with at least 42 credit hours may contact the Office of Academic Assistance (OAA) of your college (phone numbers below) to schedule an appointment for advisement or to find out times for "walk-in" advisement. To receive a particular appointment for a day and time to register, check the GSU website or visit Office of the Registrar's website at www.gsu.edu/registrar.

Additionally, if you are not able to attend Incept and would like a campus tour, please contact the Georgia State University Welcome Center at (404) 413-2063.

Placement Exams

Math Placement

All students who have not completed the math requirement in Area A of the core curriculum are strongly encouraged to take a Math Placement Test that will assess their skills and place them in an appropriate math course.

Math 1111--College Algebra and higher math courses require specific placement test scores as a prerequisite. The Math Placement Test should be taken before attending Incept, and there is no fee for students to take the placement test for the first time.

For math placement questions and dates, go to http://www.gsu.edu/counseling/math_placement.html or call the Testing Office at (404) 413-1735.

Chemistry Placement

Chem 1211K is the prerequisite for all Chemistry and Biology courses at GSU.  To register, you must take a required 45-minute diagnostic chemistry test administered by the Chemistry Department on campus at selected times (no fee for test; please bring non-programmable calculator and #2 pencil).

Who must take the test?
All except students with a chemistry AP score of 2 or better or an SAT subject score of 600 or better or completion of a college-level chemistry course.

Transient students enrolled at other universities do not have to take the test.  Please call (404)413-5565 if you think you may be exempt from taking this test or visit http://chemistry.gsu.edu/Student/1211/regtest.php
