Some specific learning disabilities have a significant effect on
a student's ability to process information from print material.
Difficulties with reading usually range from poor reading comprehension
to very slow reading rate. Taped textbooks can help the student
increase their reading comprehension and speed of processing . In
such instances, Disability Services refers the student to Student
support Services (SSS). .Student Support Services provides taped
textbooks to students with learning disabilities that effect reading
free of charge.
Many textbooks, novels, and periodicals are available on audiotape
and can be obtained from public libraries, the Library of Congress,
and Recordings for the Blind and Dyslexic. If determined appropriate,
SSS will investigate these resources for students requesting taped
materials. Documents that are not available on audiotape may be
submitted to SSS for recording. Audiotape recording takes a significant
amount of time, depending on the size of the print document. Requests
should be made at least two weeks in advance of when the material
is needed.
