Assistive Devices

The Office of Disability Services maintains and provides several mechanical and electronic devices which may be checked out by students with disabilities. As new devices are being procured from time to time, this list is not exhaustive. Below are the devices currently in use by students:

Assistive Listening Devices

An Assistive Listening Device(ALD) consists of a transmitter and microphone to be worn by the speaker and a receiver for the individual with a hearing impairment. The ALD transmits via a radio frequency. The audio is delivered without distortion and sounds as if the source is six inches from the listener's ear. Another benefit of the ALD is to minimize environmental noise.

An ALD is an excellent accommodation for large classes and to increase the volume of soft spoken instructors in smaller ones

Portable CCTV Systems (FlipperPort, Jordy)

FlipperPort and Jordy units enable people with low vision to see objects at a distance, up close and at any range in between. These battery operated systems can be worn like a pair of glasses. They are self contained, battery-operated systems which offer optimal portability, ease of use and comfort.

Now with the push of a button, you can watch your instructor, see the blackboard, read your textbook, write notes, etc. The possibilities are endless.

Mountbatten Brailler

The Mountbatten Brailler could best be considered a typewriter for Braille Users. It prints Braille pages typed by Blind and Visually Impaired students using the six key Braille pad, or can accept input from a Computer connection utilizing a standard keyboard. Primarily used for printing syllabi and light Brailling, it is available for student use on a scheduled basis within the Office of Disability Services Ace Lab.

Pictures in a Flash

Pictures In A Flash is a device used to create tactile representations of two-dimensional images for Blind and Visually Impaired students. An Image is copied onto special paper and is run through the device producing a raised diagram that students see by touch. ODS staff create these diagrams. To have diagrams produced, students must be registered with the Office of Disability Services, and make appropriate requests in advance of time of need.

AlphaSmart

The AlphaSmart 3000 is a portable keyboard. Standard word-processing commands include spell-check, cut-and-paste and find functions, while the memory holds 100 pages of text in up to eight separate files. Files can be sent back and forth between your desktop PC or Mac with the included Get Utility and USB cable. Additionally, you can fire a document directly over a serial cable to any printer with the push of a button.

When was the last time your pocket calculator crashed? Think of the Alpha-Smart 3000 as the pocket calculator of word processors
