Welcome to the Department of Philosophy at Georgia State University.

The Department is committed to the learning of all its students, undergraduate and graduate, as well as to the advancement of human knowledge. 

The Department sponsors the “Law and Society” Freshman Learning Community, and it has a popular undergraduate pre-law concentration. It has led the way in the use of the nationally recognized Supplemental Instruction program to help students in core classes. Our graduate students, in addition to working with our nationally recognized faculty, follow a teacher-training program that is one of the most intensive in the country. Our graduate students have been admitted to many of the finest Ph.D. programs in the country.

The Department is also committed to the creation of knowledge that promotes the intellectual development of the people of Georgia, the United States, and the world. It has consistently been ranked in the top-ten among M.A. programs in the United States in terms of the quality of the faculty. The faculty produce outstanding research, much of it in the Department's three areas of strength. This research has been published by leading journals and presses in the United States and Europe on topics ranging from civil rights, tolerance, and environmental ethics through free will, mental disorders, and emotion to figures such as Hegel, Kant, and Nietzsche. They have also received prestigious grants from agencies such as the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Defining Wisdom Initiative.  

Philosophy by the Numbers

  • Over 6,000 students per year enrolled in philosophy courses
  • From 2005 to 2010, faculty published 71 articles, 26 book chapters and 12 books
  • 17 full-time regular faculty members, plus 3 joint appointees
  • Over 125 undergraduate philosophy majors  
  • Over 50 philosophy graduate students
