Undergraduate Programs
Philosophy is an excellent field of study for anyone wishing a broad education that teaches one how to think and promotes self-awareness. It is particularly appropriate as a major or minor for those contemplating a career in law, government or business administration, public service, politics, education, or religion. It is often appropriate to study philosophy as a double major and the department's major is designed to make double majoring easy.
The Department offers a wide variety of courses especially developed for students in business, health sciences, education, and policy studies as well as for those who are pursuing a scientific or humanities career. Philosophy provides invaluable reasoning skills, insight into methodological presuppositions, and an appreciation of the intellectual currents that have shaped history.
The Department has developed three areas of specialization: Legal and Political Philosophy, Neurophilosophy, and Kant and Post-Kantian German Philosophy. We feel that our offerings in these three areas are some of the best to be found anywhere in the world.
Another component of the Department's program is a series of courses in applied philosophy, the study of which provides skills with practical application in one's personal, social, and professional life. Courses in this area include Contemporary Moral Problems, Philosophy of Law, and Business Ethics
