The Department is committed to the creation of knowledge that promotes the intellectual development of the people of Georgia, the United States, and the world. It has consistently been ranked in the top-ten among M.A. programs in the United States in terms of the quality of the faculty. The faculty produce outstanding research, much of it in the Department's three areas of strength. This research has been published by leading journals and presses in the United States and Europe on topics ranging from civil rights, tolerance, and environmental ethics through free will, mental disorders, and emotion to figures such as Hegel, Kant, and Nietzsche. They have also received prestigious grants from agencies such as the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Defining Wisdom Initiative.
