Dr. George Graham has been awarded a major grant from the Center of Theological Inquiry (CTI) in Princeton, NJ. The CTI supports “fresh thinking on the problems of religion and society.” It is “an independent, ecumenical institution” and is one of the nation’s most prestigious centers for research on religion. The grant will support work on Dr. Graham’s latest book, Abraham’s Dilemma: Religious Experience, Spiritual Delusion, and Moral Well-Being. In this book, Graham argues that while normal religious experiences may contribute to a person's moral identity and well-being, delusional religious experiences do not. Previous attempts to differentiate non-delusional forms of spirituality from delusional forms have tended to focus on the social context of religious experiences. Graham's book will focus on their differing effects on a person's moral character. In addition, Graham's most recent book on mental disorder, The Disordered Mind, is now available in second/revised edition.

Dr. Sarah Brosnan Joins Department of Philosophy
Dr. Sarah Brosnan has joined the faculty of the Department of Philosophy. Dr. Brosnan’s research focuses on the mechanisms underlying cooperation, reciprocity, and inequity in nonhuman primates. Her work on the evolution of key moral concepts breaks new ground and crosses disciplinary boundaries. Dr. Brosnan earned her BA from Baylor University in 1998 and her PhD from Emory University in 2004. She joined Georgia State’s Department of Psychology in 2007. Dr. Brosnan has published more than forty articles and earned an NSF CAREER award. The Baylor University Alumni Association named her as one of the 150 most influential alumni of the last 150 years.

Yanquing Zhang to Speak at Phi Sigma Tau
On Thursday, September 20, Phi Sigma Tau is hosting the first session of its Fall 2012 interdisciplinary brown bag series. Come join us at 12:15 PM in the conference room to hear GSU Professor of Computer Science Yanqing Zhang give a short presentation on some of his recent research on computational intelligence, followed by an informal conversation/Q&A session. It will last about 45 minutes to an hour, and everybody is encouraged to come even if you have to drop in late or duck out early because of class or other commitments. Don't forget to bring your lunch! We will provide snacks.

Alex Economides to BPP Law School
Alex Economides has been accepted at Brierley Price Prior (BPP) Law School (in London) and has been awarded full funding by Travers Smith LLP (a law firm). Travers Smith will pay his law school fees, provide a stipend, and give him a job on graduation. In return, he has to work for Travers Smith for two years, at which point he becomes a solicitor.

Katy Fulfer (GSU MA 2008) Publishes in Ethics and the Environment
Katy Fulfer's "The Capabilities Approach to Justice and the Flourishing of Nonsentient Life" will in appear in the June 2013 issue of Ethics and the Environment. The paper is a critical discussion and a revision of Nussbaum's position on non-human animals as presented in Frontiers of Justice. Ms. Fulfer is currently in the philosophy doctoral program at the University of Western Ontario.

Kathyrn Joyce Wins Munster Fellowship
Kathryn Joyce is the winner of the Department's 2012 Munster Fellowship. The Munster Fellowshiop is awarded annuallly to the best philosophy graduate student who will be continuing in the program in the subsequent year. Dr. Munster was Chair of the Department of Philosophy from 1965 to 1978.

Dr. Wilson Wins Sellars Prize
The North American Kant Society has awarded the 2012 Wilfrid Sellars Prize to Dr. Eric Wilson for his essay "Kant on Autonomy and the Value of Persons." The Sellars Prize is given annually to the non-tenured scholar who writes the best essay that demonstrates the continued relevance of Kant's philosophy.

Dr. Scarantino Wins Provost's Faculty Fellowship
Dr. Andrea Scarantino has been awarded a Provost’s Faculty Fellowship for 2012-2013. This fellowship is reserved for GSU’s senior scholars with a preference for full Professors. However, the only fellowship awarded for 2012-2013 was given to Dr. Scarantino, who is only in his second year as an Associate Professor. Dr. Scarantino will use this award to forward his current book project, “How To Do Things With Emotions.”

Ethics and Agency Reading Group Meeting
All members of the department are warmly invited to attend the ethics and agency reading group. Meetings will be held on Mondays at the Square Pub, in Decatur (5–7:00 PM), where we will try to do some philosophy in the “careless manner” that Hume recommends. The schedule is:

Neil Van Leeuwn to Give Paper on Religious Credence, Friday 2/24
On Friday, February 24 at 2pm Neil Van Leeuwen (GSU, Philosophy Dept) will give the first neurophilosophy talk of the Spring. The talk, entitled "Religious Credence ≠ Factual Belief" will take place in the Conference Room of the Philosophy Department (34 Peachtree St., 11th floor). Professor Van Leeuwen will argue that religious credence and factual belief are distinct cognitive attitudes, despite the fact that in ordinary language we use the same word (“belief”) for both of them. Boxill Talk and Reading Group
Bernard Boxill (University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill) will give a talk entitled "Compensatory Justice" on Friday, 2/17, at 3:00 in the Philosophy Conference Room.
In preparation for Boxill's visit, there will be reading group on Bernard Boxill's Stanford Encyc entry on “Black Reparations.” The group will meet at Dania's on Wednesday, 2/15, at 9:30 am.

Greg Moore's Appointment on Leiter Blog

According to Leiter, “This appointment solidifies Georgia State's position as the strongest terminal MA program in the U.S. for students interested in 18th- and 19th-century German philosophy.”

Greg Moore Appointed to History and Philosophy
In August of 2012, Dr. Greg Moore will be joining the Philosophy faculty roster. Dr. Moore will be jointly appointed in History and Philosophy. His research is in the history of philosophy with a focus on German philosophy of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries (esp. Herder, Fichte, Schopenhauer, Nietzsche). He is also interested in the philosophical reception of Darwinism and the philosophy of history. Dr. Moore earned his Ph.D. in 2000 from the University of Cambridge. He is the author of many articles and two books, Herder and Philosophy (Princeton University Press, forthcoming 2014) and Nietzsche, Biology and Metaphor (Cambridge University Press, 2002). We thrilled about this outstanding interdisciplinary addition to our Department.

Lucas Keefer (GSU MA 2009) Wins Prize
Lucas Keefer has won the 2011 Society for Personality and Social Psychology Theoretical Innovation Prize. This prize recognizes “the most theoretically innovative article, book chapter, or unpublished manuscript of the year.” It honors theoretical articles that are especially likely to generate the discovery of new hypotheses, new phenomena, or new ways of thinking about the discipline of social/personality psychology. Spring 2012 Neurophilosophy Forum
The Spring 2012 Neurophilosophy Forum will begin on Friday, January 27 at 2:00pm with a talk by Deena Weisberg (Temple University) on "The Limits of Imagination.” Dr. Weisberg will discuss the role of thought experiments and imaginative cognition in scientific discovery. The second talk will be given by Ingo Brigandt (University of Edmonton) on Friday, March 9 at 2:00pm. The talk, entitled "Conceptual change in biology and conceptual analysis in philosophy: a combined framework,” will offer a new theory of conceptual change in science which uses the concept of homology as a case study. Thefinal talk will be given by Don Ross (University of Cape Town) on Wednesday, April 4 at 2:00pm, and it will be entitled "Control of impulsive and addictive choice, neural learning, and ecological rationality." Dr. Ross will introduce a neural theory of addiction, discuss why certain activities are addictive and others are not, and present an analysis of the most effective heuristics people can use to avoid addiction. The Department of Philosophy at Georgia State University is pleased to welcome Elliott Sober, Hans Reichenbach Professor and William F. Vilas Research Professor at the University of Wisconsin - Madison, as the next speaker in our 2011-2012 Colloquium Series. Professor Sober will give a talk on "Instrumentalism - Old-School and New-Fangled," in the 11th floor Conference Room at 34 Peachtree St., at 4:00pm, Thursday, January 19th. Ethics and Agency Reading Group
All members of the department are warmly invited to attend the ethics and agency reading group for the spring semester of 2012. Meetings will be held on Mondays at the Square Pub, in Decatur (5–7:00 PM), where we will try to do some philosophy in the “careless manner” that Hume recommends. The first reading is Korsgaard, “Skepticism About Practical Reason, ” available on JSTOR and the Journal of Philosophy, Vol. 83, No. 1 (Jan., 1986), pp. 5-25.

Nahmias in NY Times
Dr. Eddy Nahmias’ article “Is Neuroscience the Death of Free Will?” was published in the NY Times (November 13, 2011). It reached #4 for most emailed article and #14 as most viewed. UPDATE: Dr. Nahmias’ article has won a Big Questions in Free Will Essay Prize. The prize “is aimed at providing incentives for scholars…to prepare essays related to their work that would be of interest to a nonacademic audience and to publish those essays in venues of wide readership.”

Student Symposium
The annual Student Philosophy Symposium will take place on Saturday, March 17. This event is sponsored by the Jean Beer Blumenfeld Center for Ethics, Phi Sigma Tau (Zeta Chapter), and the Center for Ethics Student Forum. An invitation for submission of papers from students is sent nationally and internationally. Each year, the symposium has grown more competitive. Last year, there were students from as far as Illinois, Rhode Island, and Hong Kong. In fact, the student from Hong Kong won the award for best paper by a grad student. There are sessions throughout the day, giving students the opportunity to showcase their best work. The end of the day is capped off with a keynote talk. This year’s keynote speaker is Valerie Tiberius (University of Minnesota). Dr. Andrew I. Cohen, Director of the Blumenfeld Center, writes: “I’m humbled by the caliber of papers and commentary that students have brought to this event each year. Both graduate and undergraduate students have contributed to this event and had a great time exchanging thoughts with fellow philosophers.” The deadline for submitting a paper is Friday, January 20. Paul Bloom Talks 11/11/2011
Paul Bloom came to Georgia State in November and presenting two talks. Professor Bloom is an award-winning Yale psychologist, author of How Pleasure Works and Descartes’ Baby, co-editor of Behavioral and Brain Sciences, and author of dozens of scientific articles in journals including Nature and Science, as well as popular venues such as The New York Times and Slate.

Altman Wins NEH Grant
Dr. Andrew Altman and Dr. C.H. Wellman have won an National Endowment for the Humanities grant to lead a summer seminar for college and university teachers in Summer 2012. The topic is “Liberty, Equality, and Justice: Philosophical Issues and Arguments.

The Ralf F. Munster Fellowship, which goes to the “the best philosophy graduate student who will be continuing in the program in the subsequent year,” has been awarded to Alex Economides. The Excellence in Teaching graduate student award goes to William Baird. The Outstanding Graduate Student Award goes to Paul Tulipana.

Graham Publishes Book
Dr. George Graham’s Addiction and Responsibility, text book, co-edited with Jeffrey Poland, was published this summer by MIT Press. This is the second book he has published since joining the department three years ago. Graham and Poland wrote a long editorial introduction that provides an overview of the philosophical significance of connections between addiction and responsibility.

Berry Edits Journal
Dr. Jessica Berry is guest editor of Issue 42 of The Journal of Nietzsche Studies and has published four articles, one of which is co-authored by second-year Master’s student, Getty Lustila. Altman Endowment
The Arlene & Alvin Altman Scholarship Endowment in Philosophy is being established by their son, Dr. Andrew Altman. Berry Publishes Book
Dr. Jessica Berry’s book Nietzsche and the Ancient Skeptical Tradition was released by Oxford University Press. The book examines Nietzsche's understanding of ancient philosophy and how this understanding influenced his work.

Nahmias Publishes Book
Dr. Eddy Nahmias co-edited, along with former GSU MA student Thomas Nadelhoffer, and Shaun Nichols, Moral Psychology: Historical and Contemporary Readings, which was published by Wiley-Blackwell. The volume collects historical work in philosophy with recent contributions from psychology and philosophy on topics such as altruism, character traits, moral responsibility, and moral intuitions.
