Motion Regarding GPA Required for Graduation

Motion:

Effective only for the Fall 2006, Spring 2007, and Summer 2007 Commencements, Section 1450, the GPA Requirement for graduation, is modified by adding the text in italics.

1450 GPA Requirement
In order to earn any Georgia State University baccalaureate degree a student must have at least a 2.00 cumulative grade point average. In light of the transition to plus-minus grading, for students graduating in Fall 2006, Spring 2007, and Summer 2007, the 2.00 requirement may be met with the higher of the regular GPA (computed with pluses and minuses) or the GSU GPA computed stripping off pluses and minuses.

Rationale:

It is possible that a student could have exactly a 2.0 GPA at the end of Summer 2006 and then earn one C- (without a counter-acting C+). Such a student would not have the 2.00 GPA required to graduate. Because students and faculty need time to adjust to the new grading system, it is appropriate, for one year, to use the higher of the regular GPA (that includes pluses and minuses) or the HOPE GPA (that does not include them).

Note that this motion changes only to the GPA graduation requirement. It does not apply to other uses of the GPA, such as graduation with honors. For all other purposes except the requirement set out in Section 1450, the regular GPA (including pluses and minuses) will be used.
