Motion to Revise the Scholastic Discipline Rules

The following scholastic discipline rules shall replace the current rules as of Spring 2001.

a.Students are placed on warning when
i.their cumulative GSU GPA is below 2.0 and
ii.they were not on supervision, or suspension the previous semester in attendance.

b.Students are placed on supervision when
i.their cumulative GSU GPA is below 2.0 and
ii.their most recent term GSU GPA is below 2.0 and
iii.they were on warning or supervision the previous semester in attendance.

c.Students are placed on suspension when
i.their cumulative GSU GPA is below 2.0 and
ii.their most recent term GSU GPA is below 2.0 and
iii.they were on supervision the previous semester in attendance.

d.Once placed on suspension, students remain on suspension until
i.their cumulative GSU GPA is 2.0 or above or
ii.they are placed on exclusion.

e.Students are placed on exclusion when
i.their cumulative GSU GPA is below 2.0 and
ii.their most recent term GSU GPA is below 2.0 and
iii.they were on suspension the previous semester in attendance.

This motion makes no other changes to the scholastic discipline rules.

Rationale:
Experience with the current rules reveals that about 45% of those on warning earn a term GPA above 2.0 in the term following the term they are placed on warning. Under the current rules, these students raise their cumulative GPA but their scholastic discipline status worsens to supervision. This is disheartening and forces students who are making progress on their own to fall to supervision (which requires that their registration be approved by the SAC). Under the proposed changes, these students will remain on warning.
