Admissions and Standards Committee

Motion to Revise the LSP and Regular Admission Criteria

Motion:

The LSP and regular admission criteria shall be modified as indicated in the table below entitled "Revised Policy."

Rationale:

When the Senate passed the current policy (see below), the Admission and Standards Committee envisioned a smooth raising of the standards to meet the Regents' 2001 requirements. However, the Enrollment Management Committee decided to move faster than Admission and Standards anticipated and, for the fall of 98, not admit any LSP students who were not athletes or non-traditionals. Other than these two groups, only those with a PGA of 2.2 or better were admitted. While this policy represented a dramatic step toward meeting the Regents' 2001 requirements, it caused a significant drop in enrollment and credit hour production.

The current policy calls for PGA required for regular admission to rise from 2.2 to 2.3 as of Fall 99. If this policy is not changed one of two things will occur. We might decide to admit students with a 2.2 PGA as LSP students in order to preserve enrollments. This would cause a very uneven pattern of LSP enrollment--almost none in fall 98 and many in fall 99. Such an uneven enrollment pattern is not desirable. On the other hand, we might to decide to only admit those who have a 2.3 PGA or better. This might well cause another significant drop in enrollment. That is not desirable either.

The proposed change essentially states that for fall of 99 we may do what we did in fall of 98--grant regular admission to applicants with a PGA of 2.2 or better and admit to LSP only athletes and non-traditions. The proposal represents a decision to "take a breather" in the progress towards the Regents' 2001 requirements in light of the dramatic steps we took in the fall of 98. This would allow us to admit more students to regular status than would be permitted under current policy. Obviously, this policy only sets minima. The EMC will set admission targets and if the Admissions Office can hit the targets without admitting students at the minima, so much the better for GSU. The policy allows for the regular admission of those with a 2.2 PGA--it does not require it.
