The seminar will examine competing philosophical accounts of three concepts at the center of legal and politcal discussion in the world today: democracy, the rule of law, and human rights. The focus will be on the most recent philosophical work, but classic texts will also be examined. Among the questions to be addressed are:

  • What is democracy?
  • Does democracy have intrinsic value?
  • What role does deliberation play in making democracy a legitimate form of goverance?
  • Can democratic principles be extended to the global arean?
  • What is the rule of law?
  • Is there a tension between democracy and the rule of law?
  • Do citizens have a duty to obey the law?
  • What are human rights?
  • What is the relation between human rights and the legitimacy of a state?
