Thesis Committee Rules

In writing the thesis, the student is assisted by the thesis committee. Its members give the student feedback on the thesis along the way, attend the thesis defense, and ultimately approve the thesis (or do not). One member of the committee, the Thesis Advisor (aka the chair), takes the lead in this process. The Department allows graduate students to ask two members of the Department to co-chair their thesis work. Co-chairing allows a student to receive detailed feedback from two professors and for two professors to write more detailed letters of recommendation.

Basic regulations for composition of the thesis committee:

  • The Thesis Advisor must be either a lecturer, tenure-track, or tenured member of Georgia State's Department of Philosophy.
  • The committee must have at least 3 members who are either lecturers, tenure-track, or tenured members of Georgia State's Department of Philosophy.
  • Additional committee members may be from outside the Department of Philosophy or outside Georgia State.
Addenda and modifications to the basic regulations:
  • Students on the "Brains & Behaviors" track are encouraged to have at least one committee member from outside of the Department of Philosophy who works in GSU's "Brains & Behaviors" Program and who is approved by the thesis advisor. For these students, the committee need have only two members who are either lecturers, tenure-track, or tenured members of Georgia State's Department of Philosophy.
  • For students on the Religious Studies Track of our M.A. program, members of Georgia State's Department of Religious Studies count as Philosophy faculty for the purposes of composing committees.
  • Faculty who are joint appointed in Philosophy and another department count as members of the Department of Philosophy for the purposes of composing committees.
