The Philosophical Gourmet Report:
A Ranking of Graduate Programs in Philosophy in the English-Speaking World, 2006-2008
by Brian Leiter
(The following is taken verbatim from The Philosophical
Gourmet Report.)
Among terminal M.A. programs, the top program in the country (in terms of faculty quality) is Tufts University.
After Tufts, several other terminal M.A. programs have very strong faculties: University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee,
Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University, and Northern Illinois University. Rounding out "the top eight"
terminal M.A. programs, in terms of faculty quality, are Georgia State University; University of Houston;
University of Missouri, St. Louis; and Western Michigan University. Other programs worth considering for students
with the right interests would also include California State University, Los Angeles; Colorado State University
(esp. for applied ethics); and Texas Tech University.
(This is the end of the text from The Philosophical Gourmet.
Here is the complete report.)
The Leiter Report Debate
The Leiter Report has become the subject of an interesting debate. Some feel that the survey does
not serve philosophy well. Others disagree. An example of the objections to the Leiter Report
can be found at
Richard Heck's website.
Leiter has written
a response to Heck's objections.
Students are urged to consider both sides of this debate.
