Phi Sigma Tau
International Honor Society in Philosophy
Phi Sigma Tau is the International Honor Society in philosophy. Founded
in 1930 at Muhlenberg College (Pennsylvania) and incorporated as a
nonprofit corporation in 1955, the society now has a network of over 140
chapters throughout the United States and Canada, at both public and
private institutions of higher learning.
Standards
"The society shall receive into its membership, irrespective of
membership in or affiliation with other organizations, only those who
attain its standards of high scholarship in philosophy and other
subjects, and who give evidence of professional merit, proficiency, and
distinction. Membership shall be conferred in strict accordance with the
standards established by the Association of College Honor Societies. The
sole basis of selection shall be the character and the scholastic or
professional records of the candidate. Reception into membership shall
be consummated without secret pledge or secret order training."

Purposes of Phi Sigma Tau
- To serve as a means of recognizing students who have achieved high
scholarship and personal interest in philosophy;
- To promote student interest in research and advanced study in
philosophy and its cognate fields;
- To provide opportunities for the preparation and critical discussion
of student and faculty papers of philosophical interest;
- To encourage a professional and friendly spirit among those who have
displayed marked ability in philosophy;
- To popularize interest in philosophy and in those who study
philosophy among members of the Georgia State University community.
Membership
The national membership fee to join Phi Sigma Tau is a one-time payment of $25.
Benefits of becoming member include opportunities for publication in Phi Sigma
Tau's bi-annual journal (Dialogue), recognition in a national directory of members,
access to philosophical resources, communication with other philosophy majors and
graduate students around the country, and regalia for your graduation gown (sash
and pin).
