Department Updates Spring 2009

Former graduate student Satu Riutta, research associate at Emory University, publishes book, Democratic Participation in Rural Tanzania and Zambia: The Impact of Civic Education.

Dr. John Duffield published an op-ed in the AJC: “To Curb Demand for Oil, Add a Tax When Prices Tank,” The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Dec. 4, 2008
He also published a short article: “The Obama Presidency, Oil, and the Middle East,” Middle East Review of International Affairs 12, no. 4 (December 2008)

Shauna Reilly will be graduating with her PhD this spring and will be beginning a tenure track Assistant Professor position at Northern Kentucky University.  She also recently had a paper accepted to PRG with Dr. Sean Richey and will be presenting two papers at the Southwestern Political Science Conference in Denver, April 9-11.

Assistant professor, Jelena Subotic, has been invited by the non-profit organization Israel America Academic Exchange (IAAE) to participate in a prestigious mission to Israel in June. Subotic will join about a dozen of her fellow scholars for this week-long trip where they will attend lectures and participate in meetings with leading Israeli and Palestinian public figures. They will also have the opportunity to tour Israel by car and helicopter.

The Center for Civic Education, funded by the U.S. Department of Education, has selected Professor and Chair Emeritus Glenn Abney as a national judge in the forthcoming "We the People" competition to be held in Washington at the Capitol in late April.  He is currently teaching a class on constitutional law for the department and serving as secretary of the GSU Emeriti Association.
