EXTERNAL PRACTICA IN CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY

Adolescent Depression Empowerment, Grady Health Services, Emory University School of Medicine

  • Type of practicum: Assessment and family intervention with depressed adolescent females
  • Supervisor: Jeana Griffith, Ph.D.
  • Required on-site hours (per week): 5
  • Number of semesters: 2
  • Description of client population: Low-income African-American female teens who are depressed and have a history of physical and/or sexual abuse.
  • Nature of Supervision: Students will meet weekly with supervisors in a group format. Students will also meet weekly for 1 hour for individual supervision.
  • Special skills required: Students should have taken courses in psychopathology, diversity, and diagnosis. Must be at least 3rd year students. Male trainees are limited to assessments while Family Intervention is handled by female students.

Anxiety and Psychological Center

  • Type of practicum: Psychological assessment with adults and children
  • Supervisor: David Rush, Ph.D.

  • Description of client population: Varies from children to adults with diverse diagnostic problems
  • Nature of supervision: Individual supervision once a week with a cognitive-behavioral orientation

Atlanta Center for Cognitive Therapy

  • Type of practicum: Cognitive-behavioral group intervention
  • Supervisor: Mark Gilson, Ph.D.
  • Required on-site hours (per week): 2
  • Number of semesters: 3
  • Description of client population: Depression, anxiety, adjustment, and impulse control disorders
  • Nature of supervision: Students will co-lead group therapy sessions. Trainees will receive individual supervision before each group session
  • Special skills required: Student must be certified in Cognitive Therapy or be in certification program

Atlanta Center for Eating Disorders

  • Type of practicum: Assessment and intervention with clients working on eating disorder issues; interventions include intensive individual therapy, day program activities, group therapy, and meal supervision
  • Supervisor: Linda Buchannan, Ph.D.
  • Required on-site hours (per week): 10-15
  • Number of semesters: 1 full year
  • Description of client population: People with eating disorders who need to continue work, and/or school while in treatment
  • Nature of supervision: Students will receive individual supervision 1 hour per week as well as optional group supervision every other Friday.
  • Special skills required: Interviewing skills, solid CBT training and behavioral analysis

Child/Adolescent Psychiatry Outpatient Clinic, Grady Health Services, Emory University School of Medicine

  • Type of practicum: Assessment and interventions with children, adolescents, and families in an outpatient psychiatry clinic.

  • Number of semesters: 2
  • Description of client population: Outpatient children and adolescent of low-income, urban population
  • Nature of supervision: At least 1 hour of individual supervision per week. Live supervision for family evaluations.
  • Special skills required: Student should have experience or interest in working in a multicultural environment.

Drug Abuse Treatment and Education Program (DATE Program), Grady Health Services, Emory University School of Medicine

  • Type of Practicum: Adolescent substance abuse intervention program that includes individual, group, and family therapy modalities

  • Description of client population: High school age adolescents (and their families) who are eligible to attend any Atlanta public high school

Emory University Counseling Center

  • Type of Practicum: Culturally sensitive psychotherapy with college students

  • Description of client population: Undergraduate and graduate students at private university
  • Nature of supervision: Supervision occurs within a vertical team model as practicum supervision is provided by doctoral intern one hour per week; supervisees also receive supervision from licensed psychologists.

Georgia Center for Children – Dekalb County

  • Type of Practicum: Individual and family therapy as well as psychological assessment with children and their families.
  • Opportunities for group therapy, play therapy, observation of forensic assessment, observation of court testimony of clinic staff, research, and attendance of multidisciplinary team meetings.

  • Description of client population: Children who have been sexually or physically abused and their families (non-offending caregivers and siblings).

  • Special skills: Students must have previous therapy experience, an interest in child maltreatment and traumatology, and if possible, relevant experiences in this area.

Georgia Institute of Technology Counseling Center

  • Type of Practicum: Short-term individual and group counseling with college students; psychoeducational groups and workshops; psychological assessment; and crisis intervention.

  • Number of semesters: 2
  • Description of client population: Undergraduate and graduate students at public university.
  • Nature of supervision: 1.5 hours of individual supervision per week; 1 hour of case conference per week; 1.5 hours of group practicum seminar per week.
  • Special skills: Some previous therapy experience is required.

Georgia State University Counseling Center

  • Type of Practicum: Individual, couples, and group psychotherapy with college students; teaching of labs for academic skills classes; outreach opportunities; specialized systematic training opportunities in a) trauma, b) stress management, c) alcohol and drug treatment, d) multicultural issues, and e) outreach.
  • Supervisor: Marolyn Wells, Ph.D.
  • Required on-site hours (per week): 10-12
  • Number of semesters: 2
  • Description of client population: A diverse Georgia State University student population. Each practicum student will have a general caseload of 4-6 individual clients, 1-2 of whom will have a history of trauma. Practicum students will also teach or lead a lab discussion group for the center's 1050 course 1 hour a week and co-lead various outreach programs.
  • Nature of supervision: Group supervision weekly for an hour and half to two hours, and one hour individual supervision per week. Group supervision is taught by Dr. Marolyn Wells. Students are introduced to object relations, interpersonal and trauma therapy approaches.
  • Special skills required: Basic relationship/working-alliance building skills and interest in use of self as instrument/countertransference issues. Special skills are always welcomed.

Metro State Prison (for Women)

  • Type of practicum: Assessment and intervention with incarcerated women. Treatment includes short-term, manualized individual therapy and group intervention based on dialectical behavior therapy.
  • Supervisor: Javel Jackson, Psy.D.
  • Required on-site hours (per week): 15-20
  • Number of semesters: Flexible quarter system, prefers one year commitment.
  • Description of client population: Mental health services for incarcerated women in a minimum to maximum security facility. Services offered on three levels of treatment from mild to severe. Typical clinical issues include substance abuse, 80% with histories of physical or sexual abuse, PTSD, and depression.
  • Nature of supervision: Each student receives one-hour weekly supervision. Sessions are documented in writing. Audio-taped treatment sessions are available on an as-needed basis. Co-facilitation of treatment groups are available at times.
  • Special skills required: Interviewing skills, DSM-IV, one testing course minimum.

Pediatric Appointment Clinic, Grady Health Services, Emory University School of Medicine

  • Type of Practicum: Child assessment in an outpatient/inpatient pediatric setting
  • Supervisor: Ann Hazzard, Ph.D.
  • Required on-site hours (per week): 12-16 (not all on site)
  • Number of semesters: 1-2
  • Description of client population: Hughes Spalding Children's Hospital provides inpatient and outpatient pediatric care to low-income, primarily African-American children. Child assessments help pediatricians provide comprehensive care for children with developmental, learning, emotional, or behavioral problems.
  • Nature of supervision: Weekly individual supervision for 1 to 11/2 hours on test administration, scoring, and interpretation, and 30 minutes to 1 hour review and feedback on written test reports.
  • Special skills required: Child assessment course

Pediatric Infectious Disease Program, Grady Health Services, Emory University School of Medicine

  • Type of practicum: Psychological assessment with HIV+ children and adolescents in an interdisciplinary pediatric clinic; possible

  • Description of client population: HIV infected children, adolescents, and families; predominantly African-Americans from low-income backgrounds

  • Special skills required: Basic skills needed in child assessment and report writing. Students must be comfortable with assessing children and working in a busy clinic setting.

Psychiatric Emergency Room, Grady Health Services, Emory University School of Medicine”

  • Type of practicum: Evaluation, crisis intervention, and triage with persons presenting at 24-hour psychiatric emergency room
    Supervisor: Carol Webb, Ph.D.
  • Required on-site hours (per week): 4
  • Number of semesters: 6 months (1)
  • Description of client population: Grady Psychiatric ER provides 24-hour psychiatric emergency services for the city of Atlanta
  • Nature of supervision: Dr. Webb is with trainee all four hours
  • Special skills required: Course in psychopathology and experience in interviewing

Ridgeview Institute

  • Type of Practicum: Intervention with children, adolescents, or adults in an inpatient setting on one of the following units: Adult Psychiatric; Adult Addiction; Child & Adolescent; Women’s Program; Senior Adult. The Women’s Program includes a specialization in the treatment of eating disorders. Opportunities for family therapy, CBT/psychoeducational group therapy, and experiential group therapy.

  • Description of client population: inpatient adults, adolescents, and children in a private, non-profit psychiatric hospital

Sickle Cell Center, Grady Health Services, Emory University School of Medicine

  • Type of practicum: Assessment and psychotherapy intervention with individuals with sickle cell disease and their families
  • Supervisor: Marietta Collins, Ph.D.
  • Required on-site hours (per week): 10
  • Number of semesters: One semester, 6-month commitment preferred
  • Description of client population: The Sickle Cell Center is a nationally recognized center of excellence that provides comprehensive primary care for patients (from infancy to adulthood) with sickle cell disease.
  • Nature of supervision: One hour per week of individual supervision to discuss the case conceptualization and relevant therapeutic intervention
  • Special skills required: Students should have assessment skills (advanced and some neuropsychological) and basic psychotherapy skills

EXTERNAL PRACTICA IN CLINICAL NEUROPSYCHOLOGY

Center for Rehabilitation Medicine, Emory University School of Medicine

  • Type of practicum: Assessment of neuropsychological disorders on a 16-bed inpatient brain injury service and an acute psychiatry unit. Evaluation of the impact of emotional disorders (e.g., depression, anxiety) on neuropsychological functioning.
  • Supervisors: Anthony Stringer, Ph.D., Jennifer Gess, Ph.D.
  • Required on-site hours (per week): 20
  • Number of semesters: 2-3
  • Description of client population: Inpatients with neuropsychological disorders resulting from stroke, TBI, neoplasms, and other neurological disorders
  • Nature of supervision: Weekly meetings, 2-hour individual supervision and 2 hour group supervision in vertical team with intern and postdoctoral students.
  • Special skills required: Students should have completed the assessment sequence, assessment practicum on-campus, and concurrent or prior enrollment/completion of the Neuropsychological Assessment course.

Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, Scottish Rite: Neuropsychology Department

  • Type of practicum: Neuropsychological assessment of children with neurological and/or developmental disorders. Opportunities exist for cognitive psychotherapy and cognitive remediation; group therapy with adolescents with acquired brain injury; epilepsy education for parents and staff.
  • Supervisors: Kathleen O'Toole, Ph.D., Tom Burns, Ph.D., Jackie Kiefel, Ph.D.
  • Required on-site hours (per week): 8-10
  • Number of semesters: 2
  • Description of client population: Children, ages 0-21, with epilepsy, brain tumor, brain injury, spinal cord injury, PDD, developmental disorders. Training will occur in a hospital setting: In-patient, Day Rehabilitation, Epilepsy Service, and Outpatient Treatment.
  • Nature of supervision: Individual supervision for 1 hour; group/didactic supervision and written edits for neuropsychological reports
  • Special skills required: Student should be in Neuropsychology program and should have completed Neuropsychological Assessment course.
  • Additional comments: Student should feel comfortable in a hospital setting and with injured children.

Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, Egleston: Hematology/Oncology Department

  • Type of practicum: Neuropsychological assessment
  • Supervisor: Alcuin Johnson, Ph.D.
  • Required on-site hours (per week): 8 hours per week
  • Number of semesters: two semesters
  • Description of client population: Brain tumors, strokes, acquired brain injury secondary to brain tumors, strokes, neurotoxicity (i.e., chemotherapy & radiation exposure)
  • Nature of supervision: one hour per week
  • Special skills required: This is an advanced practicum opportunity for students who have been trained in administration and scoring of neuropsychological tests, but would like additional experience in interpretation or neuropsychological assessments with different types of neuropathology.

Shepherd Center

  • Type of practicum: Neuropsychological assessment; psychological interventions including family education and staff consultation
  • Supervisor: Steven Macciocchi, Ph.D.
  • Required on-site hours (per week): 16
  • Number of semesters: 2
  • Description of client population: Acute and Post-acute neurorehabilitation. Students provide assessment, intervention and consultation to medical teams regarding neuropsychological consequences of neurologic disorders.
  • Nature of supervision: Face to face supervision is administered by six supervisors and will occur on each case in which the student is involved.
  • Special skills required: Test administration, and some report writing as well as Neuropsychological Assessment course.

Wesley Woods Health Center

  • Type of practicum: Neuropsychology Practicum, Dept. of Neurology, Emory University School of Medicine
  • Supervisor: Felicia Goldstein, Ph.D., Melanie Greenaway, Ph.D., AnnSollinger, Ph.D., Daniel Drane, Ph.D.
  • Required on-site hours (per week): 16
  • Number of semesters: 2 (or more if desired)
  • Description of client population: Geriatric patients referred for diagnostic workups of dementia, although younger patients (18-50) are also seen for etiologies including epilepsy and head injury.
  • Nature of supervision: Supervision with the neuropsychologists including weekly meetings to review patients. Students will gain experience in case conceptualization through interiewing patients, performing evaluations, and writing reports. A weekly Friday case conference is held with neuropsychologists from other departments including Rehabilitation Medicine and Egleston Hospital.
  • Special skills required: Experience in neuropsychological assessment, including coursework and testing.

INTERNAL PRACTICA IN CLINICAL NEUROPSYCHOLOGY

Brain Tumor Practicum, GSU Psychology Clinic

  • Type of practicum: Neuropsychological assessment
  • Supervisor: Tricia King, Ph.D.
  • Required on-site hours (per week): 6-10
  • Number of semesters: 2
  • Description of client population: adult survivors of childhood brain tumors are the primary focus; additional time will be spent with parents or spouse as well as a peer of the survivor.
  • Nature of supervision: Weekly group supervision, training in structured interviews and selected measures prior to onset of caseload, and individual supervision as needed.
  • Special skills required: Structured clinical interviews, test administration and scoring, and some report writing as well as Neuropsychological Assessment course.

Autism Spectrum Disorders Practicum, GSU Psychology Clinic

  • Type of practicum: Diagnostic and neuropsychological assessment
  • Supervisor: Diana Robins, Ph.D.
  • Required on-site hours (per week): 6-10
  • Number of semesters: 2
  • Description of client population: Diagnostic assessments for toddlers with suspected autism spectrum disorders; diagnostic and neuropsychological assessment of older individuals with suspected autism spectrum disorders
  • Nature of supervision: Weekly group supervision, training in autism-related measures prior to onset of caseload, and individual supervision as needed.
  • Special skills required: Test administration, and some report writing as well as Neuropsychological Assessment course.
