The department expects that graduate students will devote themselves
to their studies full time. Accordingly, all students accepted by the
department are offered financial support if they wish. The level of support
for incoming students is determined when they are accepted; no separate
financial application procedure is required. Policies governing the level
of support are evolving, but the goal is to insure that all students are
supported in an equitable and fair manner, consistent with their skills
and accomplishments and the resources available. Typically, support involves
both research and instructional responsibilities. For average stipends
see the GRE and Other Statistics page. All support includes
a tuition waiver, thus the actual dollar value is greater than these numbers
indicate. Beginning students may also make application to the University's
Office of Financial Aid (telephone 404-413-2400) for non-departmental
sources of aid, such as loans and University-provided scholarships.
