The Department of Psychology at Georgia State University Announces Anticipated Faculty Positions Beginning Fall 2008

Applications are invited for tenure-track (clinical and developmental psychology) and nontenure-track (lecturer) positions. A Ph.D. in psychology or a related field is required in each case. Georgia State University, which is located in downtown Atlanta and has a diverse student body, is classified as RU/H [Research University /High Research Activity]. The Department of Psychology currently supports Ph.D. level graduate programs in Clinical Psychology (APA-accredited), Community Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Neuropsychology and Behavioral Neuroscience, and Social/Cognitive Psychology (www.gsu.edu/psychology). The Department includes 39 full-time faculty, 120 doctoral students, and over 1,000 undergraduate majors. The Department also plays a significant role in several multidisciplinary research centers including the Language Research Center, the Center for Research in Atypical Development and Learning, and the NSF-funded Center for Behavioral Neuroscience, as well as in University initiatives in Language and Literacy, Brains and Behavior, and the Partnership for Urban Health Research. For all positions, we seek applicants who have a strong interest in and can contribute effectively to undergraduate education, as well as to university and professional service. Candidates for tenure-track positions should be broadly trained individuals who can establish research programs competitive for extramural funding and contribute effectively to graduate teaching.

Clinical Psychologists (Tenure track: Assistant or Associate Professor)

We are seeking two clinical psychologists. Area of focus is open, but preference will be given to candidates who can meet programmatic needs in the areas of community-clinical, child and family, or adult psychopathology. We encourage applications from researchers who focus on ethnically diverse populations. Applicants must have both a Ph.D. from an APA-accredited Clinical Psychology Program and postdoctoral supervised clinical experience that qualifies them for Georgia licensure at the time of appointment.

Developmental Psychologists (Tenure track: Assistant Professor)

We are seeking two developmental psychologists whose program of research focuses on developmental processes during infancy and/or childhood and who will be able to teach a range of courses in developmental psychology at the graduate and undergraduate levels. Area of focus is open, but preference will be given to developmental psychologists who seek to understand development within diverse populations and who may contribute to one or more of the University’s interdisciplinary centers and initiatives.

Visiting Lecturer (full and half-time, non-tenure track)

Courses available include general psychology, interpersonal behavior, statistics and methods and the natural sciences aspects of psychology. Ph.D. in Psychology or a related discipline required, along with a record of effective teaching in psychology and a record of professional achievement commensurate with the stage of the candidate’s career. Responsibilities will be primarily at the undergraduate level. Positions include benefits. Review process begins April 1 and will continue until successful candidates are identified.

Lecturers (Nontenure track)

We are seeking three broadly trained faculty members at the rank of Lecturer who can contribute effectively to undergraduate teaching and service and provide leadership for curriculum development in our undergraduate program. We are particularly interested in candidates who have expertise in the use of technology to enhance instruction and learning. Demonstrated effectiveness in undergraduate teaching is required. Pedagogical scholarship and the ability to mentor undergraduate student research are considered strengths for this position. The University has recently adopted a systematic review process for Lecturers that may result in promotion to the rank of Senior Lecturer after six years of service (http://www.cas.gsu.edu/policies_lecturer.html).

Neuroscience Position at Georgia State University

Georgia State University invites applications for an anticipated neuroscience faculty position at the associate or full professor level. This position is part of a major initiative to enhance existing strengths in neuroscience at GSU over the next three years coordinated by the Center for Behavioral Neuroscience and the GSU Brains & Behavior Program. Preference will be given to applicants working in behavioral or systems neuroscience. We are particularly interested in research that complements the CBN’s focus on the mechanisms of social behavior, neuroendocrinology, and the neuroscience of emotion. We are open both to applicants using standard laboratory animal models and to applicants with a neuroethological perspective using vertebrate or invertebrate species. Successful applicants will be individuals who will take advantage of the interdisciplinary collaborative research opportunities available within the Center for Behavioral Neuroscience and the Brains & Behavior Program.

Anticipated start date is August 2008. Applicants must have a Ph.D. degree with relevant postdoctoral experience and demonstrated ability to conduct an independent research program using modern techniques. They must also have skills and interest in teaching.
