As a neuropsychologist, my primary professional interest is in describing and understanding brain-behavior relationships in humans. As a developmental neuropsychologist, I am also interested in understanding the ways in which these relationships evolve over the life span, via the complex interplay between biology and environment. My approach to both of these questions is framed by my primary professional identification as a clinical psychologist. My graduate training was based on a scientist-practitioner model and my program of research addresses questions of clinical interest. My research investigates the cognitive and social-emotional characteristics of children, adolescents and adults with developmental disabilities, and with acquired medical and neurological disorders that interrupt normal development. Recent projects have involved three different clinical populations at different stages of development: 1) adults with developmental learning disabilities and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, 2) children and adolescents with HIV/AIDS, and 3) school-age children with acquired brain injuries. Specific studies with each of these groups address both clinical issues related to diagnosis and intervention and more basic questions about the neurobiological substrate of cognitive and social-emotional functioning. Many of these studies are collaborative efforts with colleagues at Georgia State including Robin Morris and Martha Foster. Studies of children with HIV/AIDS are a colloboration with Pamela Bachanas, Ph.D., in the Department of Psychiatry at the Emory University School of Medicine. I also serve as the Director of the Regents Center for Learning Disorders at Georgia State. This Center is funded by the Board of Regents and provides comprehensive evaluations and consultation for students with suspected learning disorders who are currently enrolled in one of the state colleges or universities in Georgia. This Center serves as a clinical training site for doctoral students in the Clinical, Counseling and School Psychology programs at Georgia State. The Center has provided me with a unique opportunity to investigate the cognitive profiles, psychosocial issues, and neurobiological correlates of developmental learning disorders in adults, and to study the effectiveness of intervention strategies and academic accomodations for these individuals.
