Ph.D., University of Washington, 1999
As a lecturer in the Department of Psychology, my primary interest is in teaching. As the Director of Undergraduate Studies, I am responsible for the over 1,400 majors in Psychology at GSU, and I chair the Undergraduate Program Committee. Advising in Psychology is handled by a fantastic team of advisors: Tenagne Mulugeta, and her graduate assistants Louis Chow and Effie Mougianis.
My teaching strengths are in the areas of neuroscience, statistics and experimental design. I specialize in developing and evaluating new technologies for use in the classroom and beyond. I currently use several online tools in my courses, including GSU's uLearn system, vClass teleconferencing, the new GSU iTunesU site and i>Clicker and CPS classroom response systems. I supervise graduate students who are instructors of record for courses in our department, and I lead our graduate teaching seminar.
Research and Summer Programs
My research interests are currently in the area of teaching. I am particularly interested in the effects of early research experience on science students’ success in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) careers.
As an affiliate of the Neuroscience Institute, I work with the summer undergraduate research program, Behavioral Research Advancements in Neuroscience (BRAIN). I am also the GSU director of our new extension of the BRAIN program into the academic year. This program is for members of groups underrepresented in STEM fields and is called Neuroscience, Education and Training (NET/Work).
I am also co-director of the high school summer research program, the Institute on Neuroscience (ION), and of a summer program for undergraduate students interested in Behavioral Neuroendocrinology called the Summer School for Behavioral Neuroendocrinology (SSBNE).
