Departmental Assessment

The Department of Recreational Services selected (4) intended outcomes to assess during FY08.  Each of the department Student Learning Outcomes (SLO’s) and Institutional Effectiveness Plans (IEP’s) tie back to the Division of Student Affairs SLO Domains (Cognitive Maturity, Effective Citizenship and Intercultural Maturity, Mature Relationships, and Integrated Identity and Personal Maturity).

The following represents a brief description of each:

1. Self-care, including good health, fitness, and wellness (SLO)
- Sub-domain is students developing lifelong leisure skills.
- The outcome is to develop Life Long Leisure Skills by participation in programs provided by the Department of Recreational Services. Yoga participants and Fitness Center participants will be assessed this year.

2. Applying knowledge in practical ways (SLO)
- Sub-domain is students learn transferable work skills.
- The outcome is that student employees will develop transferable work/career skills. The outcome will assess the percentage of student assistants who believe they have acquired transferable career/work skills by working at the Student Recreation Center. Student Assistants will be surveyed at 3 months and 6 months (and possibly 12 months) of employment. Evaluation criteria will assess improvement in one or more of the following areas: Customer Service, Conflict Resolution; Time Management; and Professional Appearance.

3. Utilization of facilities (IEP)
- The outcome is the Department of Recreational Services will provide facilities at the Student Recreation Center that are utilized by members. Effectiveness indicators will be based on the average daily (Monday through Friday) utilization data from ID swipes and hand counts at turnstiles and entry gate.

4. Building Cleanliness (IEP)
- The outcome is the Student Recreation Center will be maintained at a Cleanliness Level 2 according to the APPA (Association of Physical Plant Administrators) Custodial Service Levels guidelines. The percent of instances where the SRC meets or exceeds APPA criteria for Level 2 cleanliness. Effectiveness Indicators will be based on APPA guidelines (in general): Floors; Vertical and Horizontal Surfaces; Washrooms, Shower Fixtures and Tile; and Trash Containers.

All of the intended outcomes that were assessed cover the core functional responsibilities in the mission of the department (to promote a healthy lifestyle and deliver programs, services and facilities that meet or exceed customer needs).

Since the department offers many different activities within each core functional area, it was determined to assess different activities each year
