Jewish Studies Program

Welcome to the Georgia State University Minor in Jewish Studies.

The Jewish Studies Program at Georgia State is designed to introduce students to the history, experiences, practices, and intellectual development of Jewish communities around the world, with particular attention to Jewish communities' complex encounters with the modern world. Courses are offered by affiliate faculty with appointments in various departments throughout the College of Arts and Sciences. As a result, individual students can take courses that speak to their own particular interests and backgrounds. Courses range the introductory to advanced levels. In addition, through the Middle East Institute, the Jewish Studies Program offers both Biblical and Modern Hebrew (see the Middle East Institute website for specific information).

The Jewish Studies Program's signature course, "Introduction to Jewish Studies," is open to all undergraduates in the University. It addresses Jewish assimilation and civil rights struggles; religious history and the development of different denominations; immigration and urbanization; ethnic identity formation; Zionism, Israel, and the Israeli/Palestinian conflict; feminism and changing gender roles; anti-Semitism and the Holocaust; American Jewish culture, history and politics; and Jewish cultures (Yiddish, Hebrew, American, and vernacular).

The Jewish studies program sponsors lectures by prominent experts on issues in contemporary Jewish life.
