Introduction

Occupational health and safety plays a very important role in Georgia State University's operations. Within the Department of Safety and Risk Management, the Occupational Health and Safety program provides the following services:

Safety Training

Training is provided to various students, faculty and staff with the aim of reducing risk of hazard and injury to people, property and the environment at Georgia State University. Workshops on such topics as Lock Out Tag Out, Blood Borne Pathogens, Personal Protective, Chemical Hygiene, Lab safety etc.

Worker's Compensation Administration

This is insurance protection for injuries that arise "out of and in the course of employment". This program is administered by the Occupational Health and Safety Officer. Remember to report all injuries to your immediate supervisor and fill out a "Worker's Compensation - First Report of Injury" form. Forward this to the Safety and Risk Management Department within 24 hours.  To report an injury to the Department of Administrative Services, go to our Forms Page or call (877) 656-7475.  You will be asked for GSU's Source Identification Code, which is 7206.

Safety and Health Audits

The Department of Safety and Risk Management conducts periodic safety and health audits of the workplace and Georgia State University's designated property in an attempt to abate hazards and mitigate risk.

Right to Know Program

The Occupational Health and Safety Officer administers the "Right to Know" program in accordance with the State of Georgia regulatory requirements. This program provides basic awareness training to employees of Georgia State University who work with regulated hazardous chemicals or materials.

Accident Investigation

The Occupational Health and Safety Officer investigates accidents in an effort to reduce the risk of injury to students, faculty and staff at Georgia State University. Prevention is the overarching goal in this process.

Accident Statistics

Statistical profiling of accidents is conducted by our department in an effort to monitor trends in accident frequency, severity, nature, type, and department trends throughout the university community.
