
SIDNEY E. HARRIS

Sidney
E. Harris is a graduate of Morehouse College and earned his Ph.D. at Cornell University.
He
was named dean of the College of Business in July 1997. During his tenure (1997-2004) as dean,
he reformulated the strategic direction of the College, provided leadership for
a fundraising campaign which raised over $27 million (including the naming gift)
and launched three new research centers: Herman J. Russell International Center
for Entrepreneurship, Center for Enterprise Risk Management and Assurance
Services, and the Center for Process Innovation. The global dimension for the curriculum
was strengthened through the acquisition of more than $10 million in grants for international programs. The College is ranked in sixteen
different areas by eight different national and international publications,
including the Financial Times, BusinessWeek, U.S. News & World Report, and Forbes.
His
professional career began with Bell Telephone Laboratories in New Jersey and he moved to Georgia State University where he became a (tenured) member of
the College of Business faculty. In 1987, he joined the faculty of the
Peter F. Drucker Graduate School of Management at the Claremont Graduate School as professor of management and was
appointed chair of the Management Program in 1990. He served as dean of Drucker from 1991‑1996.
His
research and teaching focuses on best practices in management and the impacts
of foreign direct investments on industry structure in China and the Asia-Pacific region. He has traveled extensively and has
lectured internationally at several universities, including Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, Sorbonne University (Paris), Erasmus University (Holland), University of British Columbia (Canada), University of West Indies (Trinidad) and the National University of
Singapore. He co‑founded the
Institute for the Study of U.S./Japan Relations in the World Economy with Professor
Peter F. Drucker. Dr. Harris is a
member of the Society of International
Business Fellows and was elected to the Board in 2003.
He
has been a consultant to senior management in several of the country's largest
companies and to agencies of the U.S. Government. Some of the companies he has consulted
with include GM/Hughes Electronics, The Coca‑Cola Company, Xerox Corporation,
IBM, Hewlett Packard, BellSouth Services, AT&T, and Equifax Services. An active author, Dr. Harris has
written or contributed substantially to several books and monographs, and has
published more than 40 articles and occasional pieces for a wide variety of
special and general interest publications.
He
currently serves on the Board of Directors of the SunTrust STI Classic Funds, TSYS,
Transamerica Investors, and The ServiceMaster Company where he is Chairman of
the Governance and Nominating Committee and the Executive Committee. He is a former member of the Board of
Directors of Lanier Worldwide, AirGate PCS, AMRESCO, AACSB International, where
he was Chairman of the Investment Committee and the Board of Directors of the
Southern Business Administration Association. He also serves on the Board of
Directors of the Georgia Council on Substance Abuse and the National Advisory Council
of the Camp Coca-Cola Foundation.
