Call To Order
The meeting was called to order at 10:00 by chair Daniel Franklin.
Out of State Tuition Waivers
Blaine Hughes reported on the availability of tuition waivers for out
of state scholarship athletic recruits. Apparently, not only are
the number of tuition waivers available to the University limited by the
Board of Regents. There may be an attempt to reduce the number of out of
state tuition wavers available to the Athletics Program at GSU. It remains
to be seen as to whether the Athletics Department will be able to retain its
full complement of tuition waivers.
Dan Franklin commented that since the System had doubled the number of tuition waivers available to the University that the Athletics Department should gain a proportional number of waivers and that the argument should be pressed at the APACE Committee which makes recommendations as to the allocation of tuition waivers.
Approval of Minutes
A quorum being present, Dan Franklin asked for Approval of the Minutes from
the April meeting. The minutes, as amended, were approved.
Athletic Schedules
Orby Moss asked that the Athletic Schedules for the 1997-98 academic year be
approved. After a brief discussion they were approved unanimously by the
Committee.
Election of the Chair
Dan Franklin was reelected to another term as Chair of the Committee. The vote
was unanimous.
Early Registration
Carol Owen and Blaine Hughes have asked that student athletes be allowed to
register for classes at the beginning of the regularly scheduled registration
period. In this way student athletes will be able to coordinate their class
schedule with their competition and practice schedules.
Ms. Owen will report to the Committee on the progress of this initiative by the end of June.
