UNIVERSITY SENATE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE

Minutes

February 7, 2007

Present: President Carl Patton, Provost Ron Henry, Paul Alberto, Siva Nathan,

Debbie Rupp, Dabney Dixon, Dean Dabney

Guests: Ellen Posey, Linda Nelson

Dr. Alberto opened with a discussion on the Chancellor's memo regarding background checks as part of the hiring process. Through Dr. Hudson, the Chancellor's staff has requested that the faculty of Georgia State and UGA produce suggested procedural guidelines and safeguards. The policy should be ready to present to the Board by Fall 2007. Following discussion it was decided that a joint committee established by the FAC would be charged with developing such guidelines; and that Dr. Alberto would contact the Chairperson of the Academic Council at UGA to begin to coordinate efforts.

The minutes from the last meeting were reviewed and approved.

Staff Retention: Debbie Rupp reported on the number of staff leaving the University and what if any impact this would have on the budget. She referenced an article in the Georgia Budget and Policy Institute (GBPI) that states that turnover starts to negatively impact businesses when it reaches 10%.

Following discussion, it was decided that Debbie Rupp, Ellen Posey, and Linda Nelson would draft an action plan with assistance from Dr. Dabney. A proposed document will then be submitted to Executive Committee with recommendations of who might lead a task force to implement the action plan.

The next Senate Executive Committee meeting will be Monday, March 5, at 11:00A.
