The Department of Sociology offers the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree program and the Master of Arts (M.A.) degree program, providing students with both a broad exposure to the discipline of sociology as well as in-depth study in specialized areas of expertise. Qualified students are accepted into the Ph.D. program after their completion of either a baccalaureate degree (the Joint MA/PhD program) or a master's degree (the PhD-Only Program). Students may also apply to the M.A. program after their completion of a baccalaureate degree. Students elect among three concentration areas: (1) Family, Health, and Life Course, (2) Gender and Sexuality, and (3) Race and Urban Studies.
