The Margaret Andersen Award is awarded by the Department of Sociology annually (in the spring semester) to a junior or early senior who intends to pursue graduate education.  The award is $1000.  Preference will be given to students pursuing graduate work in social science programs, but anyone pursuing a graduate degree (who meets the other requirements listed below) is eligible to apply.  We enthusiastically encourage applications from minority candidates.

Students who apply MUST:

  • be sociology majors.
  • have earned between 60 and 104 credit hours (in progress course work not applicable)
  • have a 3.5 or higher GPA (on all course work completed at GSU)

Students who apply MUST:

  • submit a current Academic Evaluation. (obtained through GoSolar/PAWS or in the Arts & Sciences Office of Academic Assistance)
  • submit a letter of recommendation from a faculty member in the Department of Sociology. The recommender should describe what they know about the student's intentions for graduate work and why they feel the student will excel in graduate school (in other words, why they think the student deserves the award).
