Research and Teaching Interests
Dr. Anthony Hatch is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology. He earned his doctorate from the University of Maryland at College Park in 2009. He is committed to producing theoretically grounded social research that illuminates and fights conditions of social injustice. Dr. Hatch teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in sociological theory, health and medicine, and race and inequality.
Dr. Hatch’s current research interests lie at the intersections of critical social theory, race and ethnic studies, medical sociology, and social studies of science, knowledge, and technology. Prior to graduate school, he was intimately involved with multiple community-based research projects in behavioral science and public health. Between 2004 and 2007, Dr. Hatch held a pre-doctoral training fellowship from the American Sociological Association and National Institute of Mental Health. He currently holds a National Institute of Mental Health post-doctoral research fellowship in HIV/AIDS, mental health, and substance use in prisons and jails.
His doctoral research investigates how biomedical researchers, government health agencies, and pharmaceutical corporations have used social categories of race in the scientific study of a new biomedical and social construction called "the metabolic syndrome." He draws on insights from critical race studies, science and technology studies, and Foucault’s conception of "biopower" to explore the social and scientific history of how the metabolic syndrome has become a new way of reproducing race and racism.
