TENURE-TRACK ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR OR PROFESSOR

The Department of Sociology at Georgia State University (GSU) invites applications for a position with a PhD in sociology or a related field at the rank of tenured Associate or Full Professor with a research emphasis in urban studies. Topic areas could include housing, residential segregation, youth violence, education, and social inequalities, economic development, as well as issues concerning the built and natural urban environments. Applicants should have a record of securing and seeking external funds.  The position is part of a larger university endeavor (the Second Century Initiative) that will hire multiple urban scholars across various departments and schools within the University to build an interdisciplinary research institutional umbrella for research working groups and visiting faculty and graduate students.

Atlanta offers an impressive array of research opportunities including a diverse and fascinating urban population: As a result of GSU's Strategic Plan, the university recently embarked on a Cities Initiative, providing new opportunities for urban research, locally, nationally, and internationally. The Atlanta Census Research Data Center (ACRDC)  -- for which GSU is a part of -- is located in close proximity to the campus and provides access to extensive micro-level census, health, and other data sources  In addition, the Atlanta-based Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is often a collaborator on various urban-related GSU projects.

TENURE-TRACK ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR OR PROFESSOR

The Department of Sociology at Georgia State University invites applications for a position with a PhD in Sociology or a related field at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor, with a research emphasis in the social determinants of health-risk behaviors (ranging from diet and exercise [obesity] to smoking, drinking, illicit drug use, violence and/or risky sex, HIV/AIDS) using large quantitative datasets with a proven record of scholarship and external funding.

The position is part of a larger university endeavor (the Second Century Initiative) that will hire multiple health researchers across various departments and schools within the University to build an interdisciplinary research institutional umbrella for research working groups and visiting faculty and graduate students.

TENURE-TRACK ASSISTANT PROFESSOR

The Department of Sociology at Georgia State University invites applications for two anticipated tenure‑track assistant professor positions, beginning in August 2013, pending budgetary approval.  We are looking for a scholar with substantive research interests in one of the three following specialty areas that complement our existing strengths: 1) family; 2) health; or aging and life course.  A successful candidate must have a demonstrated research agenda that can lead to external funding.  Located in the heart of Atlanta, we are a Ph.D. granting department with a research‑active faculty and a diverse graduate and undergraduate student body.  We enthusiastically encourage applications from minority candidates.  Applicants should submit: 1) a letter outlining their qualifications; 2) a curriculum vitae; 3) two samples of their scholarly work; 4) evidence of teaching effectiveness (e.g., course syllabi, student evaluations, and statement of teaching philosophy); and 5) three letters of recommendation.  A Ph.D. is required at the time of appointment.
