Dr. Burgess joined the sociology faculty at Georgia State University in 1997. Her past and current research is informed by the theoretical and methodological approaches of life course sociology. Her on-going research applies the life course
perspective the study of intimate relationships such as marriage, sexuality and families. Dr. Burgess and Denise Donnelly are currently working on a book based on their survey of over 300 involuntary celibates. Findings from this study have been publishe in the Journal of Sex Research and Sexuality and Culture. In addition, Dr. Burgess is working with Sharon King and a team of GSU gerontologists on an NIH funded study entitled "Religion and Health in Multigenerational Black Families."
Dr. Burgess is an active member of the "Family and Life Course" and "Gender and Sexuality" specialty areas within the department. She recently collaborated with Mindy Stombler, Dawn Baunach, Denise Donnelly, and Dr. Wendy Simonds to edit Sex
Matters: The Sexuality and Society Reader, forthcoming from Allyn & Bacon. Dr. Burgess is also a fellow of the Gerontology Center and affiliated faculty with the Women's Studies Institute at GSU. Dr. Burgess teaches classes on Aging, Life Course, Fami
