Research and Teaching Interests

Chet Meeks received his PhD from the University at Albany, State University of New York, in 2003. After teaching for three years at Northern Illinois University, he joined the Georgia State Department of Sociology Faculty in the Fall of 2006.

Chet's research interests are in the areas of classical and contemporary sociological theory, sexuality and sexual politics, and the sociology of culture. His current research focuses on the role that culture plays in social movements. Using historical/archival data on the lesbian and gay movement in America, he is examining the way that political strategies like liberation or integration are in fact influenced by cultural structures within movements that link deeply felt desires and emotions to notions of citizenship and political strategy. This argument casts doubt on the received notion in social movement studies that colle ctive action is the result of rational political calculus and instead insists that what social movements do, the types of power they are able to confront, and the forms of social change they are able to enact, are always guided primarily by cultural structures which influence social movements from above and below.

With Steven Seidman and Nancy Fischer, Chet recently edited "Introducing the New Sexuality Studies: Original Essays and Interviews." In addition to his interests in sexuality, Chet is interested in globalization and its relationship to post-national forms of community and citizenship.
