Admission
Admission to the graduate program is competitive. Candidates for admission should have an academic record that suggests they can succeed at the graduate level and complete a degree in a satisfactory manner. In addition to the general re quirements of the College of Arts and Sciences, the Department of Sociology has the following requirements:

Joint M.A./Ph.D. Program
Students with a Bachelor's degree in Sociology (or related field) wishing to complete the requirements for both the Master's and Doctoral degrees in Sociology

a. Applicants must submit scores on the verbal, quantitative, and analytical sections of the Graduate Record Examination.
b. Although an undergraduate major in sociology is not required, applicants must have completed undergraduate courses in research methods and social statistics. Applicants who have not completed these courses should complete them at another sch ool or apply for and complete them in postbaccalaureate status at Georgia State University.
c. Applicants must complete the supplementary application form provided by the Department of Sociology.
d. Applicants must submit three (3) letters of recommendation from faculty personally acquainted with the applicant's academic achievements.
e. Applicants must submit a sample of their written scholarly work (e.g., their term/research paper).

Ph.D. Only Program
Students with a Master's degree in Sociology (or related field)

a. Applicants must submit scores on the verbal, quantitative, and analytical sections of the Graduate Record Examination.
b. Although a master's degree in sociology is not required, only students who have an accredited master's degree, or who have nearly completed the master's degree will be considered for the Ph.D. only program. Applicants must have completed ma ster's level course work in research methods, statistics, and sociological theory. If they have not had these courses, they must complete them as additional courses prior to enrolling in Ph.D. courses in these areas.
c. Applicants must complete the supplementary application form provided by the Department of Sociology.
d. Applicants must submit three (3) letters of recommendation from faculty personally acquainted with the applicant's academic achievements.
e. Applicants must submit a sample of their written scholarly work (e.g., their Master's thesis or term/research paper).

M.A. Only Program
Students with a Bachelor's degree in Sociology (or related field) who do not inted to seek a doctoral degree

a. Applicants must submit scores on the verbal, quantitative, and analytical sections of the Graduate Record Examination.
b. Although an undergraduate major in sociology is not required, applicants must have completed undergraduate courses in research methods and social statistics. Applicants seeking the Master of Arts degree who have not completed these courses should complete them at another school or apply for and complete them in postbaccalaureate status at Georgia State University.
c. Applicants must complete the supplementary application form provided by the Department of Sociology.
d. Two letters of recommendation.
e. Applicants are encouraged to submit a sample of their written work.

Non-Degree Status
Non-degree status is provided for students who wish to take a limited number of graduate courses related to their academic interests or for professional needs, but not leading to an advanced degree. Admission is for a maximum of 12 seme ster hours or two academic semesters, whichever comes first. Students are admitted to non-degree status at the option of the department and only if space and facilities are available. Admission to non-degree status does not guarantee admission to a degree program in the future, and courses taken in this status will generally not apply toward any subsequent degree.

Those interested in Non-Degree Status Must submit:

a. A completed Application for Graduate Study (including $25 application fee) and the supplementary Department of Sociology application form.
b. Official copies of transcripts from all colleges and universities attended.
c. A list of the courses they wish to take.

Deadlines for Applications
Ph.D. and M.A. students are admitted once a year for Fall semester. The deadline for application is April 15. Those interested in financial assistance in the form of a Graduate Research/Teaching Assistantship must submit all application materials by February 1. Admission decisions are normally made within three weeks after the applicant's file is complete.
