Welcome!

Robert Park concluded his famous 1916 essay “The City” with the exhortation to make the city a laboratory to study human nature and social processes. For us, Atlanta provides a dynamic and vibrant setting to study social processes, practices, and problems. We are committed to capitalizing on the unique opportunities of a multi-cultural and international metropolis. As Georgia State University grows in size and stature, our signs, literally and figuratively, dominate Atlanta’s downtown.

The Department of Sociology at Georgia State University is one of the largest in the region, with 25 regular faculty members. Sociology faculty members strive for excellence in instruction, research, and service. We set high standards for classroom teaching and publish in the most prestigious general journals in the discipline.

Both our undergraduate and graduate programs are thriving. Sociology undergraduate students experience regular full-time faculty teaching of all required upper division sociology courses. We also offer a rich blend of courses designed to prepare students for graduate work and for life-long learning.

Our graduate program offers the opportunity to pursue masters and doctoral studies in three specialty fields of sociology: urban and race; gender and sexuality; and family, health, and life course. The Department offers doctoral students funding as teaching assistants and research assistants, and the opportunity to collaborate on research. Further, advanced doctoral students have the opportunity to participate in a special two semester teaching sequence. Our doctoral students leave our program as both effective teachers and experienced researchers.
