Career Opportunities

A degree in sociology can prepare you for a career in a number of fields. As the American Sociological Association recently reported, "given the breadth, adaptability and utility of sociology, em ployment opportunities abound for B.A. graduates." Students who graduate with a B.A. in sociology will find themselves competing with other liberal arts graduates, but with an advantage -- knowledge of key social factors and a firm grasp on research desig n and methods. This advantage of the B.A. sociology program provides breadth and the potential for adaptability.

The following list will give you an idea of the types of jobs that are available to individuals with a B.A. in Sociology. This list is meant to be used as a starting point, for there are plenty of job opportunities that are not included her e. The list was originally published by the American Sociological Association, compiled from data supplied by Career Placement Offices and Sociology Departments at three major institutions of higher learning in the U.S.

Job Titles of B.A. Sociology Degree Recipients

(Reprinted from "Embarking Upon A Career with an Undergraduate Degree in Sociology." American Sociological Association, second edition, 1993.) In addition to the positi ons listed here, sociologists work in many other professional arenas, including positions of political and national leadership. For example, Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan (D-NY) has a doctorate in sociology and civil rights leaders Martin Luther King, J r., Jesse Jackson and Ralph Abernathy earned B.A.s in sociology. Former Police Chief (Atlanta) Beverly Harvard has a B.A. in Sociology, as does current Atlanta Major, Shirley Franklin. Take this list as a starting point, not as an endpoint.
