Symantec Antivirus Checkup

 

Checkpoint 1.

Determine if your computer has Symantec Antivirus installed.

 

        Look in the bottom right-hand corner of your computer screen, for the Symantec Antivirus shield icon , beside the digital time clock (Figure 1.).

 If your computer does not have this Symantec Antivirus shield icon present please contact the Help Center at help@gsu.edu to schedule an appointment for the Symantec Antivirus installation.

 

 

Checkpoint 2.

Check to make sure that your Antivirus definitions are up-to-date

 

      Look in the bottom right-hand corner of your computer screen (see Figure 1.) for the Symantec Antivirus shield icon .

 

        Double click on the Symantec Antivirus shield icon .

 

        Look at the Virus Definition File version date on the Symantec Antivirus main page. There is a red arrow pointing to the version date in Figure 2.

 

       If the date stamped is less than 14 days old, jump to Checkpoint 4.

       If the date stamped is more than 14 days old, continue to Checkpoint 3 to update your virus definitions, manually.

Checkpoint 3.

Updating virus definitions

 

        Click the ‘LiveUpdate…’ button shown next to the Virus Definition File version in Figure 2.

 

        Click the ‘Next’ button on the following screen (Figure 3.) to begin downloading the latest antivirus definitions.

        When the download and installation completes, click the ‘LiveUpdate…’ button again (Figure 2.) to restart the download update process. Repeat this process until Symantec Antivirus tells you that all of the Symantec products and components are currently up-to-date, shown in Figure 4.

Checkpoint 4.

Schedule weekly scans of your hard drive

 

        On the Symantec Antivirus main screen, double-click the option for ‘Scheduled Scans’ located in the left window under the heading, “Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition” (see Figure 5.).

 

        Click the underlined link to ‘New Scheduled Scan’ (see Figure 5.)

 

        Click the ‘Next’ button on the following screen (Figure 6.) to setup a new scheduled scan.

        Use the options in Figure 7. to set how often and at what time you want the computer antivirus scan to occur. Make sure that the box beside ‘Enable Scan’ is checked.

 

        Under the ‘Frequency’ heading (Figure 7.), select how often you would like Symantec Antivirus to run a thorough scan of your computer files (example:  Weekly).

 

        Under the ‘When’ heading, select the day and time at which you want your scan to begin.

 

Please keep in mind that your computer must be powered on during the scheduled antivirus scan.

 

        Click the ‘Next’ button to continue finalizing your new scheduled scan settings.

        Finally, place a check in the box of the local drive(s) that you want to scan  (See Figure 8.). DO NOT PLACE A CHECK IN THE BOX OF YOUR NETWORK DRIVES OR CD-ROM DRIVE(s). Network drives are usually lettered (f:, g:, h:, i:, ...). Only place a check in the box beside your local disk drive (c:).

 

If you have a floppy diskette inserted in your computer’s floppy disk drive, you can place a check in the box beside the 3 ½ Floppy drive (a:) to also scan your floppy diskette for viruses.

 

        When you have finished selecting all the drives you wish to scan, click the ‘Save’ button to finalize your settings .

Checkpoint 5.

Running a Symantec Antivirus manual scan

 

        On the Symantec Antivirus main screen (Figure 2.), click the [+] sign beside the ‘Scan’ option to expand (if necessary) the manual scan options.

 

        When the options expand, choose either the ‘Scan a Floppy Disk’ or ‘Scan Computer’ option (see Figure 9.).

 

        Place a check in the box beside the local drive(s) that you wish to scan for viruses. DO NOT PLACE A CHECK IN THE BOXES OF YOUR NETWORK DRIVES OR CD-ROM DRIVE(s). Network drives are usually lettered (f:, g:, h:, i:, etc.).

 

If you have a floppy diskette inserted in your computer’s floppy disk drive, you can place a check in the box beside the 3 ½ Floppy drive (a:) to also scan your floppy diskette for viruses.

 

        Click the ‘Scan’ button to begin scanning your chosen drive(s) for viruses.
