Assessment criteria: Discussion participation
The following table shows assessment criteria for participation in the discussions on the discussion board and in class sessions. Twice during the term you will be asked to assess the contributions of other students to your learning with these questions.

  1. Responds fully to the direction to participate in class discussions on the bulletin board and in class sessions.
  2. Identifies what one does not understand fully and asks for the clarifications or elaborations from others that would permit the questioner to advance his/her knowledge, understanding, or expertise.
  3. Gives clarifications or elaborations in response to others' questions or comments to advance the community's knowledge, understanding, and expertise.
  4. Makes contributions to the discussions that 1) embody understanding of others' comments, 2) challenge erroneous information, logic, or conclusions, and 3) offer alternatives to erroneous information, logic or conclusions.
  5. Substantiates one's information, logic, and conclusions.
  6. Brings relevant ideas from other resources, e.g., articles in The Wall Street Journal or other publications, to the attention of others for the purpose of enriching the discussion and developing participants' knowledge, understanding, and expertise.
  7. Comments on others' work for the purpose of helping to improve it and makes the comments in ways that focus on the work rather than on the work's authors.
  8. Encourages others to comment on one's own work for the purpose of helping to improve it.
  9. Substantially exceeds minimum expectations with respect to the number and timing of bulletin board postings.
  10. Maintains a level of excellence throughout, and shows originality and creativity in realizing 1 through 8.
B
  1. Realizes 1 through 8 fully and completely--and demonstrates overall excellence--but shows little or no originality or creativity.
  2. Exceeds minimum expectations with respect to the number and timing of bulletin board postings.
C
  1. Realizes 1 through 8 adequately--and demonstrates overall competence--but the quality of participation is uneven.
  2. Meets minimum expectations with respect to the number and timing of bulletin board postings.
D
  1. Fails to realize some elements of 1 through 8 adequately.
  2. Fail to meet minimum expectations with respect to the number and timing of bulletin board postings.
F
  1. Fails to realize several elements of 1 through 8 adequately.
  2. Fails to meet minimum expectations with respect to the number and timing of bulletin board postings.
