• students whose primary work is in other programs at Georgia State;
• students preparing to be writing specialists within organizations—technical writers and editors, publishers, and information designers and developers.

We offer professional and technical writing courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Undergraduate students have the ability to focus on professional writing within their undergraduate degree in English with a rhetoric and composition concentration. At the graduate level, students can currently take technical writing. The graduate curriculum is under revision and will include additional professional writing courses in the near future.

The curriculum is informed by current research in rhetoric and professional writing and is guided by the needs of business, industry, and society at large. Students who focus on professional writing will be able to do the following:

• view writing as situated action (people acting through writing within organizations)
• consider the ethical and political dimensions of their actions
• (writing)—understand who benefits and who is potentially hurt by their work
• recognize the importance of computers in workplace writing and in the classroom and be able to write effectively in sophisticated technological
• environments
• conduct research
• advocate reader/user needs
• collaborate effectively
• argue verbally and visually
• follow and shape the writing conventions of workplaces.
