Welcome to Six Sigma at Georgia State University

What is Six Sigma?

Six Sigma is a business methodology that helps companies determine the needs and desires of their customers and align their business processes to meeting these needs. Six Sigma uses several statistical tools to systematically gather and analyze data to help companies make informed decisions to improve processes and sustain improvement.

Six Sigma derives its name from the statistical term Sigma (ơ) which represents a unit of measurement that deviates from the mean (average) of a process. In business, the Sigma measurement represents how well a process is performing and how often a defect is likely to occur. The higher the Sigma value; the less variation and fewer defects the process will have. Six Sigma is the new standard of excellence at only 3.4 defects per million opportunities.

How does it work?

Six Sigma methodologies is a five phase project-focused approach: Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control (DMAIC). During the Define phase, customer and organizational issues are discussed and projects are created to examine the source of the problem and potential solutions. The next step is to Measure what is actually happening with the process. Once data has been sufficiently collected it is Analyzed to determine the source of the problem and potential solutions. Solutions are piloted and implemented in the Improve phase. Once improvements have been established measures are implemented to Control the process and sustain improvements.
