About Us

The Women’s Studies Institute was founded in 1994—but our history goes back to the early 1970s.

Our mission centers on examining and imagining alternatives to the ways able-bodiedness, age, class, ethnicity, nationality, race, and sexuality intersect with each other and with gender differently across contexts. Although our faculty and students work in many areas, we focus on gender and globalization, social change, and sexuality studies.

Our goals are to offer interdisciplinary perspectives related to gender to students from across campus and in our degree and certificate programs; to support faculty research and collaboration on projects related to gender; and to bring unique speakers and events to the campus and community.
