Major in Women's Studies | Minor in Women's Studies

Women’s Studies majors take interdisciplinary courses focusing on women and gender. Students will concentrate on one of 4 strands: sexualities, race, globalization, and social change. Women's Studies majors must complete Area F requirements of the College of Arts and Sciences and 30 hours of 3000-level and above courses in Women’s Studies. Women's Studies majors graduate with the B.A. degree from the College of Arts and Sciences.

Area F. Students must complete 18 hours in Area F in the Arts and Sciences Core, including WSt 2010, Introduction to Women’s Studies, a foreign language course at the 1002 level, and enough courses at the 1000 or 2000 level to complete 18 hours. Courses such as AAS 2010, Anth 2020, PolS 2401, Psyc 2040, Soci 1101, Soci 1160, or Spch 2050 are recommended. See your WSI advisor for other suggested courses to complete your Area F requirement.

Major Courses. Women’s Studies majors must complete 30 hours of upper-level (3000-4000) courses. Required are WSt 3010, Feminist Theories and either WSt 4920, Senior Research or WSt 4950, Internship.

Strands. Women's Studies undergraduate courses fall into four strands: Sexualities, Race, Globalization, and Social Change. Each WS major focuses her studies on a particular strand and is required to to take at least three courses from that strand. The remaining required courses may be taken from other strands or from general WS course offerings.

Strand II - Race: WSt 3960, African-American Literature by Women; WSt 4040, Gender/ Race/ Class in Complex Societies; WSt 4110, African-American Female Activism; WSt 4590, Cultural Studies of Gender; WSt 4750, Black Feminist Thought; WSt 4760, Activism: History and Theory; WSt 4780, African-American Lesbian and Gay Activism; WSt 4790, Womanism.

Strand III - Globalization: WSt 3990, Women's Literature II; WSt 4040, Gender/ Race/ Class in Complex Societies; WSt 4050, Global Perspectives on Violence Against Women; WSt 4110, African-American Female Activism; WSt 4210, Women in Cross-cultural Perspective; WSt 4370, Women and Religion; WSt 4772, Women in Africa; WSt 4830, Class Matters.
